Responsible Consumer Resources

Everyone can be a responsible consumer by asking where products come from and knowing what is endangered and what is sustainable. The following resources can help you ensure your purchases aren't pushing endangered species closer to extinction or promoting the destruction of habitat.

What species is that?

Photo rich Identification Guides for Wildlife Species Traded in Southeast Asia published by the ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN) can help you identify species in highest demand and greatest danger of extinction.

The IUCN Redlist of Threatened Species is a comprehensive searchable online database of all species at risk.

Is this wood from a sustainable source?

A searchable online database of sustainably sourced timber is maintained by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Avoid timber products lacking FSC certification.

What fish should I eat?

Seafood Selector is an online consumer reference for choosing sustainable seafood maintained by the Environmental Defense Fund. An International Seafood Red List covering fish commonly sold around the world with a very high risk of being sourced from unsustainable fisheries is published by Greenpeace. Consumer guides for making sustainable seafood choices in many countries are also provided by WWF.

Making eco-positive purchases

Buy products like FREELAND organic mushrooms which provide sustainable livelihoods for ex-poachers. For gifts, consider buying a tree or mangrove to help revive damaged ecosystems instead of a product that may increase pressure on them.
